It officially feels like winter here in Texas. The leaves are starting to fall, the air once thick with humidity is crisp and cool, and Texans have traded in their Nike tempo shorts for boots and parkas. It really seems more like fall to me however, because there is no snow!
Usually this time of year in Ottawa the ground is covered in snow and parka’s are a necessity, not a fashion statement. As a kid, I would spend hours playing in the snow. I would build snow forts and go ice skating with friends. There was only one thing that could drag me inside from my winter playground; hot cocoa.
I recently discovered Mexican hot chocolate at a local cafe called the Pearl Cup. It was decadent and rich of chocolate with a lovely kick of cinnamon and cayenne pepper.
After making my own maple marshmallows I decided to make my own Mexican hot chocolate mix. It’s very easy to do, and it lasts indefinitely. Making your own mix is also quite affordable, unlike the $4.00/cup you pay at a cafe.
Hot cocoa mix makes a great Christmas gift. You can package it in mason jars or decorative bags. Add a mug and a bag of homemade marshmallows and you have a thoughtful gift for anyone this holiday season. Enjoy!
3 cups non fat dry milk powder
1 ¾ cups powdered sugar
¼ cup brown sugar
1 ½ cups cocoa powder
¾ cup white chocolate chips
¾ cup semi sweet chocolate chips
¼ Tsp. salt
2 Tsp. corn starch
½ Tsp. cinnamon
¼ Tsp. cayenne pepper
In a large bowl, whisk together all ingredients.
In batches, pulse mixture in a food processor until smooth and well combined.
Store in a sealed container in a dry and dark place.
To make hot chocolate, put 1/3 cup of mixture into a mug and mix with hot water or milk.
Top with marshmallows and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
Oh, my son is going to love me now! Can’t wait to give this one a try. Hot chocolate is his favorite!
I hope he likes pepper. Eek lol This does look yummy 🙂
Such a great gift idea! I love rich hot chocolate with a hint of spice.
I am going to make this for a friend who likes that little bit of spice in chocolate … thank you for such a nice gift idea!
Glad I could help. 🙂
Hi Kris, Melissa here from Food Bloggers of Canada. Just popping by to check out your blog and to let you know we’ve added you to our Membership Directory. Welcome aboard – hopefully we can give you a little taste of home! Love Mexican hot chocolate – it’s my go to hot cocoa in winter and your photos are lovely.
Great! Excited to be a part of an awesome group of canuck food bloggers! I love Mexican hot chocolate, the slight spiciness really warms the soul in winter (seriously needed in the great white north). Thank you!
fantastic idea! this is just the perfect christmas present for my mum! thank you, thank you, thank you!
Glad I could help! Merry Christmas!
This looks delicious and would make such a great gift! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Yummy and thoughtful — a win-win!
🙂
Thanks!
What a lovely post, looks so good too! Could I try it without the cayenne?
The cayenne is very minimal so it’s not very spicy. It really just cleans the palate between each sip. If you want to cut down on the spice you could substitute cayenne pepper for chilli powder. Or you could try it without any pepper for a sweeter version. Enjoy!
YUM! Cannot wait to try this! 🙂
Wow, thank you for this!! 🙂
Mmm…..this is very good….And I am saying this because I am actually drinking this hot chocolate right now!:)
Awesome! So glad you like it! 🙂
Thanks for the recipe, I’ve had cocoa with cinnamon, but never been able to recreate a great version at home.
The secret is the small amount of cayenne. It really helps to combine all the flavours. Enjoy!
The maple marshmallows look heavenly – I’ll be checking that recipe out next! Congrats of getting FP’d too!
Thank you!
I’m really impressed, now I MUST try to do this chocolate and maple marshmallows, they looks delicious
Let me tell you, the two combined are to die for. I’ve already gone through my first batch of marshmallows just from topping my hot cocoa. lol
obviously look, not looks
excellent gift idea.
Thanks! Happy holidays!
This looks delicious. I think I found what I’ll be giving to my son’s teachers for Christmas :). And he can help make it!
What a great idea! It’s definitely kid friendly. That’s one thing I love about the holidays, cooking and baking with family. I really think it’s the best kind of bonding. Enjoy!
This is a great idea for gift and looks delicious!
Thanks! There are endless ways to package it as a gift. I like mason jars, but you could also try decorative bags, jars, or even inside a mug!
Ooh…I really like the idea of packaging this inside of a drinking mug! Think I just found my Holiday gift idea. Going to the store to buy the ingredients later today. Congratulations on Freshly Pressed!

Love the pics!!! I’m Mexican and you just made me crave one of this yuummm!! 🙂 great blog
Thanks a lot!
Hiya! I’m also a Canadian living in Texas! I know what you mean, it’s not Christmas without snow (or temps below 0ºC for that matter). Today it’s over 70F, a week and a bit away from Christmas – just weird.
A double congrats, Freshly Pressed and Food Bloggers of Canada!
Happy Holidays 😛
Hello fellow Canuck in Texas! I’ll be going to California for Christmas, so it will be even more odd! I’ve never experienced a green Christmas before. Ottawa typically sees it’s first snow fall by October. haha. Happy Holidays, eh!
I grew up near Edmonton, we had lots of snow by Halloween every year. Up in Dallas there’s more of a slim chance of a freak snow/ice storm in winter… I always go outside to build snowmen, even if they are 4″ tall! Have a good trip and pack your flip flops 😉
This loooooks deliciousssssly amazing. By the way, my ‘pet name’ of sorts for my partner is ‘munch’ so it makes this blog that much better! Great photos!! Love it.
Love it! My fiance’s nickname is manatee, he gave me the nickname munchkin.
This is a great idea, and it’s definitely delicious! Thanks for sharing and congrats on being freshly pressed!
Thank you! Happy holidays!
Can’t wait to try it! Hot Chocolate with a kick!
If you want more of a kick, double the cayenne pepper. Enjoy!
This reminds me of Nestle’s Mexican Hot Chocolate mix called Abueilta! I use the powder and bar of chocolate at home! But this looks even better : )
I’ve seen that before at Fiesta. Always intrigued me!
Genius! So simple. I’m going to give this a go over the weekend
Thanks! It really is easy to make. I’ve given a few as gifts already. 🙂
falling in love with hot chocolate this winter, the perfect comfort to a cold and wet English weather. Did you make the little ceramic tag?… would love to know how to do this.
I did make the tag. It’s actually just a salt dough ornament. Here’s the link to the recipe I followed: http://fromthetortoiseandthehare.blogspot.com/2009/12/salt-dough-message-ornaments.html
Is the spice necessary? I love hot cocoa but I can’t handle spice..
It’s actually not very spicy. You can definitely omit the cayenne pepper, or substitute it with chili powder for a more subdued flavour.
I love that balance of sweet with spicy. I’m going to have to try this sometime. And those marshmallows look delicious!
Thank you. I too enjoy a good sweet and spicy combo.
I just loved this. Your pictures look good enough to eat right out of the jar. So festive and creative and yummy. Definitely trying this.

Thanks so much! I really appreciate your kind words. 🙂
I just love this idea. I wonder what it tastes like…
I know right it looks so yummy i want to taste it!!!!!!! 😀
Nice pictures!
Great gift idea! I saw bags of chocolate chips in the salvage grocery the other day that aren’t totally bloomed. Scrounge bag hot chocolate!
I love this recipe! My husband and I just moved to Texas and are discovering how much Texas like to put cayenne pepper on things we never would have dreamed! What a great gift idea!

SOUNDS GREAT!!
Great, more delicious things I’ll have to make for my family around the holidays, just what I needed! Seriously, this looks and sounds too delicious to pass up. I’m going to make a variation with dark chocolate and peppermint extract, like a grasshopper hot chocolate. Thanks for sharing this great recipe and giving me more tasty things to (without much choice) make. Awesome post!
Yum! My mum always makes a grasshopper pie for Christmas.
wow ! this looks yummy .. i’ll definitely give it a try
Looks really delicious , love a cup of warm chocolate in a winter afternoon, with a twist
Great gift idea, and I love the addition of the little tag on the jar!
Thanks! It’s a salt dough ornament I made.
I love Mexican hot chocolate, I might have to try this recipe soon!
I have a potentially dumb question. Is there anyway to grind this all up into fine powder without using a food processor? I am so wanting to make this, it looks delicious!
hmmm. The dry stuff can all be done by hand, its just the chocolate chips… You could try chopping them or buy a block of chocolate and shred it with a cheese grater?
Ohhh that’s actually a good idea. Thank you!
This is such a great idea! Last Christmas, my six-man crew made peppermint hot chocolate as take-home gifts for their family. We are SO making this instead, next week! Thanks for sharing your recipe! 🙂
Awesome! I love peppermint hot cocoa too! Thanks!
You can also buy Mexican Hot Chocolate Tablets like ‘Abuelita’ (which is great for deserts too!!). The disadvantage is the waiting time to receive your mix, so this is a good option. Great post!
As much as I love hot chocolate….maple marshmellows? Now we’re talking.
What a great idea! I love Mexican hot chocolate (and mocha), but I’m trying to use only fair trade chocolate. Now I know how to make my own. Thanks!
like like like
Perfect! Can’t wait to cuddle up on the couch with some of this hot cocoa and look at my Christmas tree!
Got to try this soon! The marshmallows look amazing too… great photography. Lots to like here!
This looks delicious and one to try this weekend. I love your photos. Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed. Looking forward to your next post.
Looks cool!
Love this Idea, thank you for sharing it with us ♥
um YUM! I can’t wait to try this!
Oh my goodness. This seriously looks incredible! I hope you don’t mind if I share via Pinterest/ facebook? What a wonderful looking treat- thank you for sharing!
Not at all! Share away. Thanks!
I make cocoa from scratch every year in December. I have never tried this particular recipe and Mexican hot chocolate, but I will be doing so because it sounds very good.
this will work out great for me, I am a little strapped and this will make nice gifts.
Looks awesome! You make your own marshmallows?!?? I must try!
Awesome. Can’t wait to share with my Daughter. Would love a sugarless version if you happen to have one.
Noticed you have two different types, Powder and Brown. Can they be substituted?
You could try replacing the powdered sugar with this sugar free version: http://www.food.com/recipe/confectioners-sugar-replacement-for-diabetics-sugar-free-54331
For the brown sugar you could try Sugar Twin’s brown sugar replacement. Let me know if it works out for you!
I was trying to find a recipe without the coffee creamer – this one works and no gluten! Thanks for sharing!
YUM! Definitely trying this TONIGHT!!!!
I love Mexican Hot Chocolate!
Finally a hot cocoa mix with substance! Thank you for posting this recipe I am anxious to give it a try! All the others were just so generic and thin, this sounds great!

I have to make this! Lovely recipes
Beautiful and delicious!
Great photos
may have to try this since our big jar of mix is empty
Nice… Here’s a recipe from south america, brought back to Europe by the conquistador Hernan Cortez:
The following cacao recipe was said to have been brought by conquistador Hernan Cortez to Spain in 1528:
700 g cacao
750 g sugar
56 g cinnamon (probably Canella winterana)
14 Mexican peppercorns (Capsicum spp.)
14 g spice cloves (Pimenta dioica)
3 vanilla pods
1 handful of anise (probably Tagetes lucida)
1 hazelnut
musk, grey amber, and orange blossom water
Awesome idea totally going to use for stocking stuffer; THANKS!! At one point I had made bath salts this is similar and more likely to be used. I mean who has the time to take baths these days right? LOL
Yummy sharing
Yum! Thanks for the recipe and congratulations on Freshly Pressed – well deserved. Great photos too.
Looks great!
We’d love for you to consider giving our blondies, brownies or cookies a try to go along with your delicious hot chocolate recipe. Check us out on our website by the same name when you’ve got a moment. Best wishes!
Oh yum! I must admit I’m in love with the bead labels on the jars too – where did you find them?
I made them. They are salt dough ornaments which I used letter stamps on. Very very easy to do.

I don’t get what is Mexican about it, but thanks for the tip! And your pics are very nice 🙂
Cacao is native to central and South America, wherein lies Mexico. Maybe that’s why…
Your photos look fantastic, I’m envious!! I’m going to have to try this recipe soon!
Lovely recipe! I shall put some together and thanks for your good work!
I think a jar may find its way into my mailbox for our mail carrier!!

Looks like I have my grocery list! Ever since I saw Polar Express, I’ve been wanting to try cayenne pepper in my Hot Chocolate! It’s kind of my thing in my house. I add heat to everything! 😀 Thanks for sharing and Merry Christmas!
Congrats on being freshly pressed! Call me dumb,or what have you but I’ve never heard of a Mexican Hot Chocolate Mix. I thought that hot Chocolate was the same all over the world. Well, I guess you learn something new everyday! 🙂

Wow, this is great! Thank you so much! I love hot chocolate!
My love affair with Mexican Hot Chocolate began just over a year ago. Way to up the ante with the marshmallows. Those are on my must-try list now.
Definitely going to be making this and the maple marshmallows. 🙂 Great recipes!

(:
Gonna try this for my Mary Kay/ Hot chocolate party tomorrow 🙂 Thanks! I was gonna do store brand, but this sounds Sooo much better!
What, y’all don’t have Ibarra at the local mercado? Too bad…no mixing, no powders…just unwrap and add milk, canela, and star anise. I skip the marshmallows, though the local Mexican grocery carries a dozen different brands. (And don’t settle for Nestle’s Abuelita brand. Ibarra is better.)

Ohh this looks like a tasty treat! I’ve always wanted to try Mexican hot chocolate and see how it tastes different than other hot cocoa.
Love anything that’s both spicy and chocolaty, this is definitely one I’m going to try!
I’m glad we finally got some cold weather here in Texas, too. At least it’s trying to pretend it wants to be winter!
I’ve had Mexican chocolate before, too, and it’s very good and versatile.
Eager to try this. It sounds AMAZING!
Your pictures are so beautiful. We spent time at an eco spa in Mexico a few years ago, and I’ve never forgotten that delicious hot chocolate. I’m excited that I can make my own now. Thank you.
Sounds yummy! thanks for sharing.
Oh that really looks good! I never tried hot chocolate with cayenne pepper before.

Excellent…excellent. I have a feeling if I was going to follow this recipe mine would not look as good as the pictures. My compliments to you!
Thank you!!! Can’t wait to try this but do you think if I put small batches in a blender it would work?
Linda
You could try. It might work if you have a very powerful blender. The main reason I use a food processor is to get the chocolate chips shredded finely while mixing it all together. I’m not sure if a blender could do that. You could also try buying block chocolate and shredding it with a cheese grater and then mixing everything together by hand.
Thank you, appreciate the advice. I might try the block chocolate and shredding it.
I like it Thanks A lot ,,,
I am so going to try this, I was wracking my brains for some nice, affordable DIY gifts for my co-workers – thanks! 😉
Sounds delicious. Recently discovered Mexican chocolate sorbet.. out of this world!
Congrats on FP!

This worked really well – even though I don’t have an electric blender! I sifted in the cocoa to remove any compressed lumps, and just blended the dry ingredients with a balloon whisk. The white and dark chocolate chips look really pretty scattered throughout.
I experimented by increasing the cayenne pepper to half a teaspoon (our version might not be as hot as a US brand), added half a teaspoon of dried powdered ginger for variation (the scent is amazing with chocolate), and for decoration as well as flavour, a whole cinnamon stick and half a vanilla pod to each 1-pint jar.
Of course I had to taste-test it a LOT… Yummy 🙂
Thanks for such a great foodie blog – you’re a Christmas lifesaver!
It surely looks good, and I believe it’ll taste good too. Would like to make one serve of it, as a gift fo myself 😉 Thanks for sharing the recipe and congrats for being in freshly pressed. 🙂
Yeah, it’s frigid here in Colorado, so I think tonight is a great night to try this!
love the photos!
The weather’s changing. In Ottawa it was 50F yesterday and there’s not a snowflake in sight. I need some pick-me-ups to offset our green Christmas… so I’m trying some of your hot chocolate to wash down my blue eggs 🙂
Nice post, and lovely photos. I love hot chocolate.

love this 🙂 great idea!
I tried your Mexican hot chocolate mix today. It was delicious. I was afraid to add the cayenne pepper to be honest so that I made it without the cayenne pepper. After I made hot cocoa drinks for my family, I sprinkled a bit of cayenne pepper in my hot cocoa. It was great! So, I added the right amount cayenne pepper in the hot cocoa mix. I don’t have to buy hot cocoa mix anymore. it is much better than stored ones. Thank you for sharing your great recipe!
Those are some beautiful photographs!
This is great. I enjoy the passion you have for making hot chocolate. I might use the recipe myself. I never thought hot chocolate could be homade. I come from a mexican family who has grown up drinking mexican hot chocolate. In my years I have only seen and tried one form of hot chocolate and that is the Abuelita hot chocolate bought in mexican stores. The Abuelita hot chocolate comes in a circular round rock dense form wrapped in yellow plastic material with the picture of a grandma on the top. I would most definetly like to try your form of mexican hot chocolate with some of your homade marshmellow. The picture makes the hot chocolate look mouth watering. Great post.

Hmmm, I usually enjoy a 60/40 in the cold weather – 60 percent hot chocolate, 40 percent coffee. The combination of what I could create with this are savory though!

We love Mexican hot cocoa! I’ve wanted to make homemade marshmallows, but now with your excellent idea of a Christmas gift. . .hmm. . . the wheels are turning.
I’m from Texas too so this was a staple in my house, but I have to admit that I never made it on my own and never even attempted marshmallows….so I will have to give both a try.
